Dance and Polarity

Another end of the week, I've just noticed I've been doing this blog for 7 years , wow.
I'm working on a piece for non classical at the moment, it a movement of a concerto , a Scherzo. I'm working with tones and chasing beats. It's an incredible privilege to be working with an orchestra. Jessica Cottis is the conductor.I've followed Jessica's work for a long time so I'm very excited about this performance and new work.

The work is a very light work, a dance with rigid edges and chased broken beats, I'm building a lexicon of sound combinations for the orchestra with the drum machine which is really exciting and I am working with a 808 drum machine There are 4 other composers working on the concerto, so it should be quite an experience when the work gets performed.
The image above is called Scherzo, I did a study on the sound of the word in colours and shapes.
Bye for now ,
Jo

Value Shopping

So I really enjoy selling things especially my own music.
Today I'm doing an experiment on my bandcamp page. I've changed the price of my tracks .I've priced things depending on how much time I've spend on them.
I've done this for a number of reasons , but mainly that fact I stumbled upon a website that was offering musician services for £3.60 an hour, people were betting for 15 minutes of work as a freelancer. When I reflect back on the costs that musicians incur through practice, education instruments equipment, time delivery, travel sites just make a mockery of the system for music.

I'm not happy with selling my music for £1 on bandcamp and on iTunes, it feels so wrong when you compare the costs of studio time, creativity equipment and the actual royalties that come back. As an independent label I'm not happy with how much it costs to make high quality physical albums and also the niche market so I'm thinking of ways to develop my own way of selling work that explores value, ethics and cost.

Just for today, I've changed the prices on the page just to see what it physically looks like, I put most of the work up to £1,000 or at least over £500 for 1 track.
I've left some tracks the same as I couldn't bring my self to change them.
Its just for a day , to see how it feels.

Its is something that I am going to try to do again. That is,questioning aspects of value and worth in different parameters for music and art.

As an independent artist I can do this, I am my own responsibility,my own aesthetic, my own shop.
So I'll just try it and see,

Will write back soon,

Jo
