Play Field Back
Published 19 September 2013 by JT

I am playing at Graham Dunnings new Albums Launch this Sunday 22nd at Field Play Back, BIDDLE BROTHERS
88 Lower Clapton Road, E8 0QRn .As well as writing music he runs a radio show on NTS called London Fractal Meat on a Spongy Bone
Grahams asked me to just play my field recordings; this i quite unusual for me as most of my music is highly transformed when performed live.

When working in the studio with field recordings I’ve become quite particular about how I work with them. The time, the environ, the memory, the people and resonance at the time of writing all influence how the recording is used as much as the properties of the actual sound. Some times I go back to a recording I have taken years ago to work through questions and resolutions in sound. Sometimes I impulsively work with field recordings even if it has nothing to do with the original concept of the work.

With Crystal Sounds of a Synchrotron, the recordings of the actual built space of the Synchrotron were paramount to providing a very human physical context to the pure data sourced from the particle accelerator. The pure data seemed to generate it’s own micro melodies in it’s own time and place. The work starts with a union of both recorded space and pure data, it ends with untransformed pure data , the source of light.
I think it will be an interesting event and am looking forward to playing it in and working with Graham, London Sound Survey will also be playing so, it promises to be a good night, come along if you are around and come up and say hallo,
Good Sound to all,

Mermaids Boomkat
Published 20 September 2013 by JT

Hallo ,
My Album mermaids has made boomkat. So , the review and link to Sale are below.
Edition of 250 copies with insert. 'Mermaids' contains four pieces composed and recorded by Prix Ars Electronica Award winner, Jo Thomas in 2013. Her first physical release since 'Nature Of Habit' - a piece inspired by the London riots of 2011 - operates around concepts of freedom and unity, signified by the use of glitches and sonic metaphors of water and transformation. The first piece, 'Mermaid' feels like a simulated recording of a dank cave; droplets ping off cold hard surfaces and create strange echoes shaped by uneven surfaces. 'Bream Choir' is more kinetic; phasing, diffused tones glance around the soundsphere, cut at unpredictable angles in gasps and bursts of abstract verse against a constant low-end presence. 'Scales' sounds like a field recording of a crater, replete with morphing jangling bells which become strafing streaks of resonance to unnerving effect. 'Earth, Moon and the Stars' is a gaseous, psychedelic closer slowly swilled with sheer, prickly glitches and spumes of glistening digital crackle roiling in murky motion.

Very pleased ,
Thank you boomkat ,
