Scherzo TR808
Published 20 March 2018 by JT

So I have been writing a work called Scherzo for a Drum machine Concerto which was played in Village underground on the 18th of March.I had the privilege of working with the conductor Jessica Cottis and the Non Classical orchestra and 4 other composers Max De Warner,Lawrence Osborn, Josephine Stevenson and Beni Giles. In this post I just wanted to give a quick overview on how the work was written , what I had in mind.As most of my followers know I work with fragments of sound, I come from a back ground of quite abstract electronic music. A lot of live work and a lot of sound transformation. This challenge was interesting for me as a composer as it offered me the chance to expand electronic sound into and out off the orchestra. I did this by structuring gaps in the orchestration for the frequencies of the drum machine to pop through bounce out of. I stayed away from phrasing in the writing and worked with quite dynamic volume changes, in both the part for the drum machine and the orchestra. When I was playing my set live , there was one layer of the part which was scored through midi and another which was a live set on top of those midi notes to break into their structures and offer a rupturing of the speed and dynamic volume range. I was also using grains from my voice in rhythmic patterns to morph into the beats. There was no transformation on the vocal material other than simple desk manipulation of mid range , bass and high frequencies. There is a photo above which shows me working the drum machine. I think there might be a recording of the work out , and I will share it to all interested when it come through. Thank you for all your interest in my work, it its alway appreciated, Jo
